Hochoetz lies right at the mouth of the Ötztal above the village of Oetz, the first area you meet after turning off the Inn valley. Snowmaking is total, the slopes mostly wide intermediates, and queues are rare - the resort lives off families and locals. From the Zugspitzblick viewing platform you can pick out the summit of the Zugspitze seventy kilometres away on a clear day. The lift pass is also valid at neighbouring Kühtai, reached by bus from Oetz.

The praise starts with how family-minded the place is: the gondola out of Oetz gets you up even in foul weather, and the multi-function building gathers a restaurant, children's facilities, rental and sun terraces, with elevators and viewing platforms that suit parents. Reviewers note that the lift fleet has been almost entirely renewed, that the tree-lined runs vary in character, and that the queue for the gondola back down stays short even in peak weeks.
The small scale attracts criticism: runs are short and need linking if you don't want to be back on a lift every five minutes. Signage comes up repeatedly - pistes are barely numbered, and matching the map to the hill takes guesswork. Paid parking and climbing pass prices annoy regulars. Advanced skiers report uneven grooming and find almost nothing genuinely difficult here.
