Isola 2000 was built from nothing in 1972 at the head of a high valley below the Col de la Lombarde, which carries the Italian border. The village sits in the middle of the area and you can ski from almost every building - the layout was designed that way. Nice is ninety kilometres away, making this one of the few places where you can ski in the morning and walk by the sea in the evening. The base is at 1,800 m, so snow is more reliable here than at its Maritime Alps neighbours, and there is more sun than in the northern Alps.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the snow and the proximity to the sea: ninety minutes from Nice through the gorges of the Maritime Alps and you are at two thousand metres, where the cover is often better than at resorts further north. The terrain is varied, especially for beginners and intermediates, and after a fall there is off-piste in the trees. The pass is cheap, queues do not happen, and the views towards the Mercantour are called the resort's greatest asset.
Appearance and upkeep draw the criticism: the village was built in the 1970s, and its concrete blocks are called ugly and run-down. Reviews say the resort has gone without investment for years: some runs have disappeared and the lifts are old. Evenings are quiet, with few bars and restaurants, and most guests cook for themselves.
