Jackson Hole sits at Teton Village beneath the wall of the Teton Range, at the gateway to Grand Teton National Park. Its heart is the red aerial tram, which lifts you to Rendezvous Mountain at 3,185 m in nine minutes; directly below the top station begins Corbet's Couloir, entered by dropping off a cornice. Half the terrain is for experts, and the resort's reputation as the most technically demanding in the United States has rested on that for half a century. The town of Jackson, twenty kilometres away, is the real American West: saloons, elk-antler arches on the square and wintering elk herds.

The praise is for the terrain: readers of the ski magazines regularly vote Jackson Hole the best expert mountain in North America. The vertical is over 1,250 metres, among the largest on the continent, and the pitch holds from top to bottom without flats. Reviewers note the fast lifts and the view of the Teton range.
Price draws criticism - the tickets are among the most expensive in the country - along with queues: at peak times the wait reaches forty minutes, and parking is hard. Beginners have nothing here: there are five green runs on the whole mountain, all in one corner at the base, and a novice spends the week lapping the same short slope.
