The area straddles the Col de la Madeleine, familiar from the Tour de France: Valmorel, Doucy and Celliers on the Tarentaise side, Saint-François-Longchamp on the Maurienne side. Valmorel was built in the 1970s deliberately against the concrete resorts of the era - low buildings, timber facades, a car-free pedestrian street. The skiing is mostly gentle and wooded, with few black runs. Some sectors are still served by old drag lifts, and the links between the valleys run through them.

Visitors praise the village and the family focus: Valmorel is built of stone and wood, closed to cars, and turns up again and again on lists of the most child-friendly resorts in France. Almost three quarters of the terrain is easy, wide and sunny, so learning here is straightforward, and the staff and ski schools are described as welcoming.
The complaints concern snow in mild winters: the area is not high and loses cover quickly in a thaw. Beginners note that no green run reaches the village itself, so the way back is on blues. Strong skiers find little that is difficult, and non-French speakers sometimes struggle to make themselves understood.
