The Loser rises above Altaussee in the Styrian Salzkammergut, with the lake of the same name at its foot. Nearly all the pistes are easy and the family run from the summit covers nine kilometres, but the Loser's real reputation lies elsewhere: the plateau above the tree line is reckoned among the best freeride terrain in the Eastern Alps, and the lifts open straight onto it. The same mountain holds the salt mine where, at the end of the war, the Nazis hid thousands of paintings looted across Europe; they were found there in 1945.

Grooming is the headline praise, with pistes kept in shape and carrying the Styrian slope-quality seal, while modern six-seat chairlifts move people without noticeable waits. The resort's real reputation is freeride: the off-piste zones here are rated among the most spectacular in the Alps, and cover up high is usually excellent. Visitors also like the quiet, the quick mountain huts and the view over the Altaussee lake towards the Dachstein.
Being small and largely unknown draws criticism, and the valley descents are called dull and narrow in places. The snow park scores badly, apres-ski is middling, and there is little marked difficult terrain for a strong skier. Reviews mention closed runs, with the Sandling to Rehkogel link and the black Loserfenster not always open. The nine-kilometre toboggan run at fifteen euros was called a letdown, partly unprepared and too flat.
