Métabief sits on the flank of the Mont d'Or in the Jura near the Swiss border, and it is the largest ski station in the range. From the top the whole chain of the Alps opens up from Mont Blanc to the Bernese peaks, and one of France's biggest cross-country networks runs alongside.

What sets the station apart is that it speaks openly about its own future. Back in 2020 the managing body decided to wind down alpine skiing by 2030-2035: modelling with Climsnow showed that, with warming at its current rate, spending fifteen million euros on replacement lifts made no sense. The station is reorienting towards year-round tourism, while the skiing carries on as before.

What visitors say about the resort

Within the Jura this is the main downhill address, and that is where the praise starts: its three sectors give different skiing, from open slopes to runs through the spruce. Regulars name the Renversee piste, the snowpark, the off-piste lines in the trees and the Alpine view from the Mont d'Or. The mood is relaxed and family-oriented, and staff are praised for pulling seasons together in lean snow years.

The lifts, long outgrown by the numbers using them, draw criticism, as does the snow: the altitudes are low, cover is thin and thaws eat it fast, while good skiers and teenagers find it tame. Then there is the future: back in 2020 the syndicate running the resort, working from climate projections, decided not to replace its lifts but only maintain them, and to wind alpine skiing down by around 2030 to 2035, putting the money into year-round activities. The resort is still operating.
