The panorama comes first in the reviews: from the terrace you see Monviso on one side and the Piedmont plain on the other, which earned it the nickname of a white balcony above the flatlands. Visitors agree it is intimate and uncrowded, the staff lively and welcoming, and the kitchen at the mountain refuge is singled out for quality and generous portions. Dogs are welcome. There is room for beginners and children, plus snowshoe and touring routes all around.
Snow and modest infrastructure draw criticism. There is no snowmaking at all, so skiing depends on what falls: in mild winters there was nothing left to ski by the end of January. The elevations are low, which makes the season short and unpredictable. There are only a handful of lifts and they are basic: a two-seat chair, a drag lift and two carpets. Specialist ratings score the area low, and service is sometimes called brusque.
