The praise is for value against scale: the skiable area is large, the trail count runs past a hundred, and both tickets and lodging in Durango cost far less than at Colorado's marquee resorts. Children of twelve and under ski free. Midweek the mountain is close to empty, so you ski down and get straight back on the lift. Reviewers highlight the secluded, more demanding runs on the back side.
Snowfall is where it loses out, since the mountain gets less than neighbouring southern Colorado areas. Experts find the variety thin, with no terrain above the treeline and few serious lines. Weekends fill the place up and parking becomes a problem. Service comes in for repeated criticism, with ticket staff and lift operators described as curt. Food is called expensive and mediocre, and Lift 4 takes around twenty minutes to the top.
