Riekstu Kalns stands at Baldone, some thirty kilometres from Riga, and counts as the largest ski area in Latvia - which, with thirty-six metres of vertical, says more about the country than the hill. Praise centres on this being Latvia's biggest hill and the one nearest Riga: about half an hour from the city, with a decent spread of lines by local standards, from the learning slope to the main descent with its two terraces and stepped pitches. The snowpark gets its own credit, along with a ski-cross track, a tubing hill and cross-country loops next door. Rental is rated fair in price, and passes can be bought by the hour.
The overload at weekends and school holidays draws criticism: the capital next door fills the place up, and visitors describe waiting an hour and a half to two hours just to get hold of rental equipment. Some reviews report a cold reception for families with young children and a rigid reading of the rules over ticket refunds. The descents are very short by mountain standards, the lifts are mostly drags, and the season depends entirely on frost for the guns to run.
