Sulden sits in a dead-end valley beneath the Ortler, the highest peak in South Tyrol at 3,905 m, with its glaciers visible straight from the pistes. The village stands at 1,900 m, so the season opens in late October, earlier than almost any non-glacier resort in the Alps. The Schöntauf valley run stretches eleven kilometres. Sulden also holds one of Reinhold Messner's museums, the MMM Ortles, devoted to ice and winter mountaineering; Messner himself keeps a herd of yaks that graze above the village.

What visitors say about the resort
Visitors praise the snow: Solda has won awards for snow reliability, depths sit around one to two metres, and the panorama of the surrounding four-thousanders is the memory people take away. Lifts reach roughly 3250 metres, and the off-piste from up there gets compared to Chamonix, Verbier and Monterosa. Well-groomed pistes, no crush even in peak weeks, courteous staff and affordable decent hotels round it out.
Connectivity draws criticism: the lifts are modern but poorly linked, and it is easy to get stranded between the main system and the rest. The gondola is called extremely slow, some connecting lifts old, and the top cable car can mean a real wait. Signage at junctions is poor, and blue runs sometimes ski more like reds. Mountain restaurants are few and fill up, while the village offers little beyond a supermarket, a tobacconist and rental shops. Madritsch gets windy.
