Volen stands by Yakhroma in the Dmitrov district, fifty kilometres from Moscow, on the side of the Yakhroma river valley. The vertical is nominal, fifty metres, but there are six lifts, mostly easy runs and full floodlighting: a large share of the skiing here happens in the evening. The toboggan run has a lift of its own, so nobody has to drag a tube up by hand.

What visitors say about the resort

Reviewers like how close it is: a little over forty kilometres from the Moscow ring road and you are already skiing. They describe a good spread of slopes, from gentle learning areas to the branches off the main hill that locals value - a freeride line through the trees, a narrow fast run and a route with kickers. The grooming and the rental gear get credit, along with the tubing park and the webcam at the lifts, which people check before setting off.

Criticism lands on weekends: lifts break down now and then, crowds build up under them, and the slopes feel cramped in the evening. The most frequent complaint is the rental shop - people describe an hour in line at the counter and forty minutes more at the cash desk, with a queue for instructors too. Daytime skiing is called expensive, cafe prices get their share, and hotel guests complain about the food, the cleaning and the rooms.
