Zauchensee is the highest area in the Salzburger Sportwelt, and that is not a formality: the snow arrives earlier and lasts longer than at its regional neighbours. The Kälberloch women's World Cup downhill runs on the flank of the Gamskogel, one of the more respected courses on the calendar. The area reaches over the ridge to Flachauwinkl, which has its own exit off the Tauern motorway - a few minutes from road to lift. The pistes are mostly intermediate, but the cirque below the Tauernkar is left to freeriders.

Grooming, called exceptional, leads the praise, along with the lift fleet: modern, fast, some chairs with heated seats. Snow holds up reliably even in winters when nearby resorts struggle. The village is small and quiet, yet Ski amadé opens a nearly endless supply of terrain, and the Panorama Link gondola tied the area to Shuttleberg and Snow Space Salzburg. Reviewers flag the huts and bars across the mountain, with good food at sensible prices, and that a ski day starts without a car or a ski bus.
The bottleneck at the base attracts criticism: every run funnels into one area and it gets congested. Opinions on queues split - some visitors insist the high-speed gondolas cope, while others waited longer in peak weeks than at other resorts in the region. Apres-ski and nightlife are repeatedly called weak. Reaching the Flachauwinkl side means a shuttle bus across the Tauern motorway.
