Monterosa Ski stitches together three valleys beneath the southern wall of the Monte Rosa massif: the Valsesia with Alagna in Piedmont, the Val di Gressoney and the Val d'Ayas in the Aosta Valley. The villages are Walser: German-speaking settlers came over from the Valais in the thirteenth century, and their galleried houses still stand in Gressoney and Alagna. There are not many groomed pistes, and people come for something else - freeriding from Punta Indren at 3,260 m, and heliskiing, one of the few legal operations in the Alps. You move between the valleys over the Salati and Bettaforca passes.

The praise starts with the freeriding: Monterosa is called one of the best off-piste areas in Europe, and its terrain is long rather than sheer, which suits people just starting to ski off the trail. Reviewers note the space across three valleys, the absence of queues and crowds on the pistes, and the good food in the mountain huts.
The lifts draw criticism: some chairs are ancient doubles, and the return to Champoluc after three in the afternoon builds a queue that can last an hour. The second complaint is that the area is shut too readily in wind, costing a whole day. There is almost nothing to do here besides skiing.
