Belalp rises above the village of Blatten in the Valais, and the climb starts in the valley itself - an aerial tramway and a gondola gain almost eight hundred metres before the skiing begins. The runs lie almost entirely above the tree line, up to the Hohstock at 3,118 m, with the Great Aletsch Glacier, the largest in the Alps and a World Heritage site, facing them across the valley. Freeriders reach a bowl hidden from the pistes through a tunnel cut in the rock. Every January the resort holds the Witches' Descent, a mass costume race and one of the best known in Switzerland.

The Hohstock sector and the long run behind the tunnel carry the praise, rated the most impressive descent here. Reviews note that you ski without crowds and without resort polish, and that authenticity is exactly the appeal. The set-up for families with small children is called very good. Those after serious skiing are pointed to the black runs and the off-piste descents from above three thousand metres.
A visible drop in standards over recent years draws the criticism. Reviewers describe thin piste preparation precisely during high season, crowded slopes and long lift queues, with the complaint about getting little performance for the full price appearing in plain words, and some guests saying they have stopped recommending the place. The price is steep even by Swiss standards. Apres-ski barely exists, and several runs are called unnecessarily narrow.
