Hinterstoder lies at the dead end of the Stodertal in Upper Austria, beneath the walls of the Totes Gebirge, and the vertical here is huge for these latitudes - 1,400 metres from the village to the Höss. Almost a quarter of the terrain is black, unusually much for an area otherwise family-minded. The main run carries the name of Hannes Trinkl, a native of this valley and a downhill world champion, and it regularly hosts World Cup rounds. The Höss panorama descent runs for over seven kilometres.

The lifts draw the praise: a ten-seat Hirschkogelbahn and a six-seat Hoess Express count as luxury for an area this size, and test reports add top marks for grooming, snow reliability and parking. The learning sector with its Sunny Kids Park is rated among the best in its class, roomy and gentle. Free ski buses across the Pyhrn-Priel region go in the plus column too.
The valley run takes the sharpest criticism: it is called too narrow and too dull, made up almost entirely of flat sections broken by a couple of short steep pitches. After the old chair was replaced, waits got longer rather than shorter, up to ten minutes at busy times. The Hoess drag lift rarely runs, because the track under it will not hold when snow is thin. Guests report that Hoesskogel, Hoess and the 2000er stood idle in high season, and that advertised child and student discounts vanish when you book online.
