Three Salzburg villages - Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach - are linked by lift into a single loop known as the Königstour: thirty-five kilometres of continuous skiing from village to village, done in a day. Above it all stands the wall of the Hochkönig and the Steinernes Meer, the "sea of stone", a bare limestone plateau without a single tree. The slopes themselves are the opposite - low and wooded, and almost all of them rely on snowmaking. The villages have stayed villages, with family hotels rather than chains.

Hochkönig is valued for the long Königstour - a full-day circuit with 7,000 metres of vertical drop in total. Visitors praise the views of the Hochkönig massif, the relaxed family atmosphere and prices noticeably lower than in neighbouring Saalbach.

The main criticism is the altitude: the top is around 1,900 metres, and lower sections become slushy in warm winters. The second issue is the resort's spread-out layout: the three villages are linked by pistes, but reaching the far sectors takes a long time. There is little challenging terrain.
