The Schmittenhöhe rises directly above the town of Zell am See and its lake, which is in view from most of the runs. There are five valley descents, and one of them, the Trass, reaches gradients of seventy per cent - the steepest groomed piste in the area. Since 2019 the zellamseeXpress gondola has connected the Schmitten to the Glemmtal, and the joint Alpin Card adds the Kitzsteinhorn at Kaprun and the whole Saalbach Skicircus to the pass. In the evenings a floodlit run operates above the rooftops of the town.

Criticism focuses on the elevation: the base is at 750 m, and the run into town is far from always open. The second issue is that the ski area is small, at around 70 km, and enough for only a couple of days for a confident skier. Visitors also complain about queues for the gondola in town.
