The Kitzsteinhorn was Austria's first glacier ski area: the lifts opened in 1965 and it remains the only place in the Salzburg province where you can ski from October into May. At the top, the Gipfelwelt 3000 offers a viewing gallery and a tunnel through the mountain to the south face, looking across at the Grossglockner. Some of the pistes are genuinely hard - the Black Mamba is among the steepest in Austria. In 2019 the K-ons gondola linked the glacier to the Maiskogel at the edge of Kaprun, so you can now ride from the village to the summit without taking your skis off; the Maiskogel itself has stayed gentle and family-oriented.

Kitzsteinhorn is praised for its glacier: skiing from October to June, snow-sure conditions and an altitude of over 3,000 m. Visitors highlight the new connection with Maiskogel - you can now reach the glacier from Kaprun without changing to a bus.
The main complaints concern the weather: the glacier is exposed to every wind, and the upper lifts are often closed, sometimes for the whole day. The other issue is that the pistes are repetitive and mostly intermediate. Visitors also report crowds in the autumn months, when there is nowhere else to ski.
