Hohsaas rises above Saas-Grund, neighbour to the famous Saas-Fee, with over a kilometre and a half of vertical. The gondola first reaches Kreuzboden, a broad sunny plateau of gentle slopes and children's areas; higher up, from the station at 3,142 m, there is nothing easy left - only glacier runs and the view of the eighteen four-thousanders of the Saas valley standing in a half circle. The valley run down to Saas-Grund covers eight kilometres.

The lifts earn the praise: two modern eight-person gondolas carry you from the valley to the very top, and reviews call them more comfortable than what runs in neighbouring Saas-Fee. The vertical is enormous, yet the skiing is far calmer than on the other side of the valley. The south-westerly aspect brings plenty of light and makes the shape of the slope easier to read, and the snow is rated among the most reliable in Switzerland.
The lack of chairlifts draws criticism: after every descent you take the skis off and ride the gondola again unless you settle for the drag lifts at Kreuzboden. The upper section is marked red and black only and the valley run is red too, so genuine beginners have no business up there. Guests complain of closed pistes, and the wind redistributes snow quickly, leaving a short window for off-piste. The ride up is long and prices are Swiss.
