Saas-Fee sits at the head of the Saas valley, ringed by eighteen four-thousand-metre peaks, and the village is car-free - vehicles are left at the entrance. The Metro Alpin, an underground funicular cut through the rock, climbs to Mittelallalin at 3,500 m, where a revolving restaurant and an ice pavilion hollowed out of the glacier await. The Fee glacier supports summer skiing, and national teams come here for July and August training camps. The longest descent, from Mittelallalin down to the village, adds up to fourteen kilometres.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the snow and the village: Saas-Fee has one of the most dependable records in the Alps, with ordinary skiing from mid-December to mid-April and the glacier open all year. Cars are barred from the village, and that changes the atmosphere noticeably: it is quiet in a way large resorts cannot manage. Queues are rare, and the longest wait runs to about ten minutes.
Price draws criticism - the resort is expensive even by Swiss standards - as does size: the area is hemmed in between glaciers and steep walls and can be covered quickly. The cable cars are slow and crowded at weekends and in high season. Reviewers also complain about the grading: the reds feel closer to black and most blues are really reds.
