Kitzbühel is a medieval town that once grew rich on silver and copper mining, and ski races have been held here since the end of the nineteenth century. The chief of them, the Hahnenkamm race on the Streif, has run since 1931 and counts as the hardest on the World Cup calendar: a start pitched at eighty-five per cent and the Mausefalle jump immediately below it. The area has one weakness - the base station sits at just 800 m, so almost every run depends on snowmaking. Kirchberg, on the far side of the ridge, is linked by lift and is noticeably cheaper.

Reviews of Kitzbühel focus first and foremost on its lively medieval town, not just the slopes: visitors like having somewhere to go after skiing and that the resort does not feel built solely around the lifts. The ski area also earns praise, with almost 200 km of pistes and the famous Streif.

The main weakness is mentioned unanimously: altitude. The lowest point is around 800 m, and in warm winters the lower slopes become slushy, while returning to town requires a lift. Prices in town are another common criticism, as they are noticeably higher than in neighbouring valleys. Reviewers' advice: go in January or February and do not count on skiing all the way down to the village.
