Les Crosets is a tiny village in the Val-d'Illiez above Champéry, built entirely around skiing: the lifts start at the front doors. This is the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil, and the pistes lead on into France and across to neighbouring Champoussin and Morgins.

It is to Les Crosets that the Swiss Wall descends - the Pas de Chavanette, one of the best-known slopes in the Alps: it starts at the French border, is marked orange outside the usual difficulty scale, and is almost always a field of moguls in winter. A superpark with a halfpipe operates beside the village, and the Champéry to Les Crosets link is floodlit in the evenings.

What visitors say about the resort

The praise is for the position: this is the Swiss gateway to the Portes du Soleil, the lift is a few steps from the hotels, and a couple of rides put you in Avoriaz or Champoussin. The village stays quiet even when the French side of the domain is packed. The skiing suits intermediates and strong skiers - wide open bowls above the treeline, with easy drops into gullies off-piste. The notorious Swiss Wall at Chavanette is right next door.

The lifts draw criticism: the fleet is dated, the chairs are slow and unhooded, the site is exposed and a windy ride becomes an ordeal, with some lifts shut in bad weather. The south-facing aspect that people love on a sunny day turns the snow slushy in spring, and visitors find snowmaking insufficient - conditions are often reported better on the French side. Swiss prices are called steep. Apres-ski is absent; for bars people go to Champery or Avoriaz.
