Les Sybelles was assembled in 2003 from six separate villages of the Maurienne, joined by lifts to a common summit: L'Ouillon, at 2,431 m. It is the highest grass mountain in Europe, and that dictates the skiing - wide open slopes without rock, where snow settles evenly and early. Neighbouring Les Perrons is rougher and rockier. The villages differ: Le Corbier and La Toussuire were built as purpose-made resorts in the late 1960s, while Saint-Sorlin, Saint-Jean-d'Arves, Les Bottières and Saint-Colomban remain mountain villages.

Les Sybelles is praised for its size at a modest price: 300 km of pistes make it one of France's largest ski areas, while the lift pass is cheaper than at its better-known neighbours. Visitors praise Saint-Sorlin's sunny aspect and the peaceful atmosphere.
