Valloire and Valmeinier stand in the upper Maurienne at the foot of the Col du Galibier - the pass that decides the Tour de France each summer and lies under snow all winter. The skiing spreads across three mountains, with more than three quarters of the pistes on the Valloire side, an old village with a seventeenth-century stone church. Valmeinier, by contrast, was built in the 1970s and sits higher, right at the tree line. The area is not high by Alpine standards, but its north-facing aspect holds snow longer than you would expect.

Visitors praise the mix of altitude, price and lifts: much of the area lies above two thousand metres, the snow holds even in weak winters, the equipment is mostly modern, and queues are rare even in the holidays. Intermediates rate the long blues and reds, stronger skiers the off-piste right beside the pistes. Prices are called reasonable for Savoie.
The criticism starts with the evenings, of which there are effectively none. In the holidays school groups fill the slopes and the area around Valmeinier 1800 gets crowded. Beginners warn that the green runs here feel closer to blue, and that reaching the nursery slopes is not a simple trip.
