Livigno lies in a high valley at 1,816 m, cut off from the rest of Italy by passes that used to close for the winter - an isolation that earned the valley duty-free status, still in force today. The skiing occupies both flanks above the town: Mottolino on one side, Carosello 3000 on the other. Mottolino is known for its terrain park, one of the most serious in Europe, and will host the Olympic freestyle and snowboard events in 2026. The altitude brings other benefits: a season from November into May and good conditions for altitude training camps.

Reviews describe Livigno as a resort of altitude, snow and duty-free shopping. The valley at 1,800 m holds snow longer than neighbouring resorts, while its duty-free status makes fuel, alcohol and equipment noticeably cheaper. Visitors praise the snowparks and the relaxed family-friendly atmosphere.
The main complaint is the journey: getting there takes a long time, mountain passes close in winter, and the remaining tunnel can have queues. Secondly, the ski area is split between two slopes on opposite sides of the valley, with a bus running between them. Thirdly, there are few difficult pistes.
