Mammoth is a volcano on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada, and the snowfall is measured in metres: Pacific fronts clear the range and dump precisely here. The lifts sometimes open in October and close in late May, occasionally in July - the longest season in California. The upper mountain is treeless and fully exposed, the lower half runs through pine forest. The resort has long been the capital of American freestyle: the parks are built year-round and the US team trains on them in summer.

What visitors say about the resort
Mammoth Mountain is valued for its snowfall and long season: Pacific weather fronts bring record snow totals, and skiing continues into June, and sometimes longer. Visitors praise the vertical drop, terrain parks and views of the Sierra Nevada.
Criticisms include wetter snow than in the Rocky Mountains - the local nickname "Sierra cement" also appears in reviews - and wind that causes the upper lifts to close. Visitors also complain about the drive from Los Angeles and weekend crowds.
