Mayrhofen lies in the Zillertal with its slopes split across the valley: the Penken is the loud side, with the park and the bars, while the Ahorn opposite is gentle and quiet, laid out for beginners. The Ahorn cable car carries a hundred and sixty people in one cabin, the largest in Austria, and since 2015 a three-cable gondola has run to the Penken from the middle of the village. The local landmark is the Harakiri: at a gradient of seventy-eight per cent it is the steepest groomed piste in the country. Further up the valley the area takes in Rastkogel and Eggalm above Lanersbach.
