The Hasliberg is a sunny terrace high above the Aare valley, reached by cable car straight from Meiringen. The town below is known for something else: a few minutes away is the Reichenbach Falls, where Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes, served by an old funicular. The skiing comes in three tiers - wooded runs at the bottom, wide open slopes on the Hochsträss, natural couloirs on the Planplatten. From the Alpen tower top station you see the Wetterhorn and the Bernese four-thousanders at once.

Value for money leads most reviews: the pistes are varied and well groomed, and the pass is reasonable by Swiss standards. The resort is repeatedly called the right size for a family - enough skiing for almost everyone, small enough that nobody gets lost. Children get a practice area, a magic carpet and their own ski school. Queues are all but absent, and the Bidmi-Kaserstatt six-seater with weather hoods and child safety bars is singled out.
The awkward layout is the standing complaint. Many runs finish in a way that forces you to carry speed to reach the next lift, and sometimes you cannot make it at all and end up walking. Getting back often means narrow traverses through the forest, and the pistes are not especially wide. Snowboarders report the worst of it, and strong skiers find too few genuine black runs.
