What visitors say about the resort
The praise goes to terrain for strong skiers: Hotham is called Australia's powder capital and the best place in the country for advanced riders, with Mary's Slide and Golden Point named often. The layout helps: the village sits on the ridge with almost everything dropping away below. The main lifts face the prevailing winds and keep turning in foul weather, and its own airport takes flights from Sydney and Melbourne.
Cost and logistics draw objections. A resort entry fee on top of the lift ticket is called greedy, and a six-day adult peak pass at around AUD 512 compares badly with Europe. Village parking is almost nonexistent: cars are left down the road and a bus brings you back. Anyone not up to the extreme sectors lands in Heavenly Valley, where runs from two lifts merge into one gully, bumped out by lunchtime. Beginner areas Big D and Summit get crowded, and Summit shuts in high wind.
