Northstar California Resort
1 / 16Northstar California Resort is on Lake Tahoe in the western United States. 19 lifts serve guests. Elevations: 1,929 - 2,624 m. Rating: 3.6/5.
Trail information
Northstar lies north of Lake Tahoe by the town of Truckee, and differs from its neighbours in being almost entirely wooded: the runs are cut through tall pines, so when the weather closes in there is still visibility here while the open ridges around are blind. The back side beyond Lookout is steeper and largely left ungroomed. The base village is resort-built, with a skating rink on the square and the gondola leaving from it. Vail Resorts has owned the place since 2010, and the Epic pass is valid here.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the polish and the intermediate terrain: more than half the mountain is rated intermediate, the grooming is immaculate, and there is a good park and marked glade areas. The base village is smart and lively, and San Francisco is three or four hours away, so Northstar is often used as a base for touring the whole Tahoe basin.
Crowds draw the criticism: this is the Bay Area's favourite Tahoe resort, and on a good weekend it is packed. Day visitors park a mile out and ride a shuttle, then an ageing gondola; parking is paid and the price keeps rising. Strong skiers are in the wrong place - there is no double-black terrain at all.
