Park City began as a silver camp: by the end of the nineteenth century thousands of miners worked here, and Main Street with its wooden fronts survives from that time, standing right by the lower lift station. In 2015/16 a gondola linked Park City Mountain with neighbouring Canyons, making the combined area the largest in the United States. Salt Lake City is half an hour away, and in 2002 the town hosted the Olympic snowboard and freestyle events. Most of the runs thread through open Rocky Mountain forest; above three thousand metres the trees give out.
