This is Gstaad's main ski area, entered from four directions: Zweisimmen and St. Stephan in the upper Simmental, Saanenmöser and Schönried in the Saanenland. The slopes are almost uniformly gentle - three quarters of the runs are blue - and the area is valued not for steepness but for space and views across the Bernese Alps. Gstaad itself is a few kilometres away, a village with a long-standing reputation as a society resort, filling each winter with visitors from Geneva and Zurich. The season is short, ending in late March: the altitudes are not high.

What visitors say about the resort

The praise is for the calm family skiing: most of the terrain is easy, wide and well kept, and queues are practically unknown. Snowmaking reaches all the way down to Zweisimmen, so the valley run works even in weak winters. The area is well connected to Gstaad and Saanen by train and bus, and there is a fun park with a halfpipe and several toboggan runs.

The lack of anything hard draws criticism: real blacks are few and strong skiers tire quickly; the most interesting ground is below the Hornfluh near Schönried and the descent from the Parwengesattel to St. Stephan. The lower villages sit at modest altitude and are short of natural snow in mild winters.
