Rossfeld lies above Berchtesgaden right by the Austrian border and is reckoned the most naturally snow-sure area hereabouts - there is no snowmaking at all, and none is needed. The runs are nearly all easy, but the descent to Oberau stretches six kilometres and the upper section has a steeper pitch. The view takes in the Watzmann, the Dachstein, the Tennengebirge and the Salzach valley as far as Salzburg. Over the ridge the area adjoins Austrian Zinken, so you can ski across two countries if you like.

Snow is what reviewers rate first: Rossfeld is known as the most snow-sure corner of the Berchtesgaden area, and on natural cover at that, with decent piste conditions noted even in lean winters. The panorama is the other theme, taking in the Berchtesgaden and Austrian Alps and, on a clear day, Salzburg, so the big sun terrace appears in nearly every account. Families get a nursery lift, a kids' park and a ski school.
Lifts and size are where the grumbling starts. The whole area runs on drag lifts, and that category scores worst in independent assessments. There is no lift back once the valley run to Oberau is finished, so the return leg is a scheduled bus, which annoys plenty of visitors. Anyone after a big linked area is told bluntly to look elsewhere: the choice of runs dries up within a couple of hours.
