Saariselkä stands in Finnish Lapland and counts as the northernmost resort in Europe with more than one lift. The skiing spreads over two fells, Iisakkipää and Kaunispää, with very little vertical. Urho Kekkonen National Park, one of Finland's largest, begins next door, and around 230 kilometres of cross-country trails are laid there in winter. Ivalo airport is twenty minutes away. In December and January the sun never rises, but the aurora shows almost every other night.

What visitors say about the resort
Being Europe's northernmost ski area is part of the appeal. Reviewers enjoy the skiing on two fells, a long easy descent of a couple of kilometres, well-kept pistes, clean buildings and decent rental gear, plus instructors who tailor lessons to the beginner. The village is compact, Urho Kekkonen National Park starts next door with a vast cross-country network through forest, lakes and fells, reindeer turn up on the trails, and the northern lights are rated among the best anywhere.
Cost is the main grumble: the resort is called one of the priciest in Finland, though other reviews find the pass reasonable. Service slows at peak times. The area is small even by Lapland standards, the vertical tiny, and wind and cold turn the slopes icy. In early January there is barely any daylight and you ski in twilight, which does not suit everyone. Snow park, off-piste and apres-ski all rate poorly.
