Luosto stands in Pyhä-Luosto National Park in Finnish Lapland, a few kilometres from neighbouring Pyhä, with which it shares a cross-country trail network. The alpine area is small, four lifts, though nearly half the kilometres are graded difficult. On the neighbouring Lampivaara fell works an amethyst mine - the only one in Europe open to visitors, where you can dig the stone out yourself.

What visitors say about the resort
The setting carries the praise: the hill sits inside Pyha-Luosto National Park, the scenery is called magical and the snow excellent. The slopes stay quiet, and outside the peak week guests describe having them almost to themselves. The resort's real strength is cross-country: the trails are exceptionally well kept, with plenty of huts and fire pits. A cosy restaurant with a big terrace sits at the base, with rental and a ski school.
The downhill side falls short: the runs can be counted on one hand and a strong skier is finished quickly. Reviewers call the lifts archaic next to the Alps or the Dolomites, and off-piste options and the terrain park both score poorly. Apres-ski is close to nonexistent, so evenings come down to winter excursions. Cold is a genuine warning too, with temperatures below minus thirty. People come here for an Arctic winter holiday; skiing is the extra.
