Ylläs lies in Finnish Lapland above the Arctic Circle, on the flanks of the Yllästunturi fell at 719 m, one of the highest in the region. The hill stands in the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, and from it you see a chain of neighbouring fells stretching for tens of kilometres. In December the sun does not rise at all, so people ski in blue twilight and under the aurora, with a season lasting into early May. The cross-country network is among the largest anywhere - over three hundred kilometres of track - and one of the gondola cabins contains a sauna.

What visitors say about the resort
Ylläs is valued for having Finland's greatest vertical drop and long pistes found nowhere else in the country. Visitors praise the two ski areas on opposite sides of the fell, the cross-country trails and the quiet national park surroundings.
Criticism focuses on the same issues as across the region: short winter daylight hours, frost and wind on the exposed summit. Another drawback is that the two bases on opposite sides of the mountain are connected by road, making travel between them inconvenient without a car. Visitors also complain about the limited evening entertainment.
