The Arlberg is called the cradle of alpine skiing with good reason: it was here in the early twentieth century that Hannes Schneider founded the first mass ski school and the technique later named after the region. It only became Austria's largest connected area in 2016, when the Flexen gondola between Zürs and Stuben closed the circuit from St. Anton to Warth. The villages differ sharply in character: St. Anton lives on après-ski and a young crowd, Lech and Zürs are quieter and dearer, Warth and Schröcken are family places. Schröcken is also one of the snowiest villages in Europe, averaging eleven metres of fresh snow a winter.

Reviews describe St. Anton and the whole Arlberg as a resort for skiers who already know what they are doing. Visitors praise the scale, with more than 300 km, the number of off-piste options and the snowfall: Arlberg consistently receives more precipitation than the neighbouring valleys. Many say that the "White Ring" is a route worth visiting the resort for on its own.

The criticism is consistent too: there are few gentle pistes, beginners may feel cramped, and the runs into the villages become mogulled by the evening. Après-ski in St. Anton is noisy - reviews recommend Lech or Zürs for those travelling with children. Visitors also regularly complain about queues at the Galzigbahn in high season.
