Crystal earns its reputation on terrain: the gated Northway zone has its own lift and more black and double-black riding than anyone covers in a day. Backcountry gates open only once patrol has finished avalanche work, which gives wild skiing with a margin of safety. The high-speed quads and six-packs get credit, as does the view of Mount Rainier from the ridge.
Parking is the standing grievance: people are advised to arrive before 8:30, weekend spots must be reserved and paid for, and one account describes cars backed up from the resort dozens of miles down to Auburn. The Rainier Gondola has unusually few cabins and builds long queues even off-peak, while Chair 6 and Northway are slow doubles. Weekends and holidays are overcrowded, weekdays far easier. Tickets and food are called overpriced, and the lodge and management take criticism too.
