Val Cenis runs along the Maurienne valley at the foot of the Mont Cenis pass, on the boundary of the Vanoise National Park - chamois come down in winter and the road over the pass leads into Italy in summer. Its calling card is L'Escargot: a gently switchbacking descent from the summit to the village, one of the longest green runs in Europe and manageable on your second day. Above it the skiing changes character, with open slopes to 2,800 m looking across at the Vanoise glaciers. The villages are real ones - Lanslevillard is known for its fifteenth-century frescoed chapel.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the snow and the quiet: the area sits high, the cover holds dependably, and there are few tourists, so queues barely exist. Reviewers note that the villages live all year round and have stayed genuinely French, with no neon-lit megabars. Intermediates have room here: plenty of fast blues and reds, plus a couple of blacks. Prices are called among the fairest in Savoie.
Grooming draws the criticism and is rated middling against the neighbours. Evening life amounts to a few bars and restaurants, which suits families and bores everyone else. Strong skiers complain that the area wears thin after several days, and that there is less winter sun here than they would like.
