Empty lift lines and sunshine top the list: the slopes face south, so it stays bright and mild even in January, and the chairlifts are described as quick and comfortable. Grooming is called exceptional even when snowfall has been meagre. The village itself is a favourite - properly Savoyard, compact, with shops and restaurants within walking distance. The ski school is strong, English-language lessons are available, and the pass is inexpensive.

Size is the complaint. An experienced skier uses up the area in three or four days, some runs are shut from time to time, and a few blue pistes are steeper than beginners expect. The black Balmes run is never groomed and is physically punishing. Up on the mountain you have to pole roughly four hundred metres across a flat section to reach the best red. Après-ski barely exists, and some guests feel the pass price does not match the amount of skiing.
