Wanlong sits in the Chongli district of Zhangjiakou, 250 kilometres northwest of Beijing. It is one of China's oldest private resorts, and in 2022 it was among the venues of the Beijing Olympics, for which a high-speed rail line was run out from the capital. Snowmaking is total - these dry mountains get little of their own. Nearly a third of the terrain is black. One curiosity is the year-round slope of synthetic matting, skied through the summer too.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the most complete mountain in Chongli. Over thirty runs cover every level and, unlike at the neighbours, some are proper descents of two kilometres or more. Lifts get good marks, rental is well organised and the gear close to new. Guns stand on every piste and cover lasts into late March. Wanlong is the least wind exposed area in Chongli. Reviewers like the food, the run out from Beijing and the empty weekdays.
Weekends and snow quality draw the criticism. Wanlong is the busiest area in Chongli, closest to the high speed rail station, so weekends bring far more people and the blue runs fill with hesitant beginners. The snow is machine made, the pistes hard packed and icy, and nobody should come here for powder. The cold is severe, down to minus 15 or 20. Passes cost more than at the neighbours, and the base and lodging disappoint: few hotels, weak quality.
