Ounasvaara is a fell on the edge of Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, and you can reach it straight from town. The confluence of the Kemijoki and the Ounasjoki is in view from the slopes. The area is small, five lifts, but there is an FIS-standard run, a park and a children's zone. Over two hundred kilometres of cross-country trails run around it, fifty of them floodlit. Rovaniemi, though, is known for something else: Santa Claus Village with its post office stands here, exactly on the Arctic Circle.

What visitors say about the resort
Reviewers lead with the location: the hill sits inside Rovaniemi, five minutes from the centre. They report few skiers even in midwinter and almost no lift queues. Beginners are told this is a good place to start: a wide, gentle learning area served by conveyor lifts, a long easy run, a workable rental shop and short lesson packages that parents rate highly. The river views and the cross-country stadium next door get separate mentions.
Criticism falls on how little is open at times: some visitors found a single lift and three runs working and judged the price steep compared with Levi or Ruka. The extra charge for the children's area irritates people, and that area strikes many as too small and too short. The other recurring complaint is that the top pistes drop almost straight off the summit and feel harsh to a novice, leaving a narrow middle ground between too easy and too steep.
