The 4 Vallées around Mont Fort is the largest ski area in Switzerland, with Verbier, La Tzoumaz, Bruson, Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Thyon joined into a single circuit. Most of the terrain lies above the tree line, and the area's fame rests less on its pistes than on what lies between them: Verbier hosts the final of the Freeride World Tour every year. Tortin backs up that reputation - a long mogul face below Les Gentianes that is never groomed. Down at valley level, though, the villages have plenty of gentle ground for anyone still learning.

Les Collons and the 4 Vallées are praised for freeriding: the terrain around Mont Fort is considered some of the best in the Alps, and people come here specifically for it. The scale is impressive too, with more than 400 km covered by a single lift pass.
The criticism is consistent: some lifts are outdated and cannot handle the crowds, making queues for the lift to Mont Fort legendary. The second issue is prices in Les Collons. Third, connections between the valleys are long, while there are fewer groomed pistes for intermediates than you might expect from a ski area of this size.
