The Axamer Lizum was built for the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics and also hosted the alpine events of the 1976 Games - a rare case of one area serving two Olympics. Innsbruck is nineteen kilometres away with a free ski bus from the city, and locals come up after work. Nearly half the terrain is classed as difficult, a lot for Tyrol, and the bowl beneath the Kalkkögel wall has long been known to freeriders. Since 2022 a ten-seat gondola has run to the Hoadl summit.

What reviewers praise is the terrain and the Olympic pedigree: Axamer Lizum hosted the Games twice, the men's GS course is still there, and confident skiers and freeriders enjoy it. The new high-speed gondola with a mid-station is called world-class uplift. Proximity to Innsbruck with free buses and access straight off the motorway make it an easy day trip, and the mountain huts are far cheaper than St Anton or Ischgl.
The rest of the lift park draws criticism: the chairs are old and slow, and one guest summed it up as a four-seater being the best on offer, followed by half an hour in line. Base buildings apart from the ticket office and the gondola look dated. Less than half of the advertised easy terrain really works for beginners. On weekends and bluebird days all of Innsbruck turns up, the car park overflows, and without a pass parking costs ten euros a day.
