Borovets is the oldest resort in Bulgaria, begun in 1896 as Chamkoria, a royal hunting lodge in the pine forests of the Rila. The area comprises three sectors - Sitnyakovo, Yastrebets and Markudjik - with a gondola from the village to Yastrebets, where World Cup races have been held. Above the resort stands Musala at 2,925 m, the highest point in the entire Balkan peninsula. The lower half runs through dense pine, the upper opens out; the season holds into April, and snow lies on Markudjik into May.
