Falakro lies in Greek Macedonia above the town of Drama, on the flanks of the mountain whose name means "bald": the summit is indeed treeless. For Greece the resort is high, with its base at 1,615 metres, so the snow is steadier here than further south. A third of the kilometres are black, making Falakro one of the more demanding areas in the country. It is quiet: Thessaloniki is two hours away, and most visitors are local.

The praise is for the trees and the altitude. Most runs are cut through forest, so skiing works in flat light and on windy days and the lifts rarely shut. The top station sits above 2200 m, giving Falakro one of the longest seasons in the country and usually enough snow. In good winters reviews turn enthusiastic, with visitors writing of tonnes of powder. New lifts and the slope crew get direct credit.
The piste map draws the sharpest criticism, called very bad and unclear, making it hard to tell where a run goes and how steep it is. Snowmaking is minimal, so the place depends on natural snow and in lean winters the cover is not there. The access road is often under snow, and the setup suits day trippers: lodging and on-mountain dining are sparse.
