Falakro ski resort was founded in 1980 on the initiative of the Drama Mountaineering Association to meet the main recreational and sporting needs of the surrounding area. Nevertheless, over the years the ski centre has gained momentum and a devoted following, making it one of the most important ski resorts in the country and the main tourist attraction in the Thrace region.

The resort has 21 pistes of varying difficulty with a total length of 20 km, ranging from 230 to 1,500 metres. There are also longer pistes of more than 2,500 m, with a vertical drop from 1,615 to 2,232 m on the northern slopes, which are also suitable for sporting events. Natural snow lies on the northern, northwestern and northeastern slopes, which are above 2,000 m above sea level and offer excellent skiing variety. Falakro's important comparative advantage is its long snow-cover period due to its geographical location and high elevation, as the ski resort base is at 1,720 m and the slopes reach 2,232 m.
