Aleko lies on Vitosha, the mountain standing directly over Sofia: twelve kilometres from the city centre, with the gondola starting in the Simeonovo district. The skiing sits below Cherni Vrah, 2,290 m, and the whole city is in view from the pistes. The runs are mostly easy and there is little snowmaking, so the area depends heavily on the winter. Vitosha has been a nature park since 1934, the first in the Balkans; its slopes are known for their stone rivers, bands of boulders running straight down the mountain.

What visitors say about the resort
Location is what saves this place: a real mountain starts a few kilometres from central Sofia, the trip takes about half an hour, and locals ski after work or squeeze in a couple of hours at the weekend. In a good winter the snow piles up decently. By European standards the money involved is trivial, with passes and rental a fraction of Alpine rates. Night skiing runs on a floodlit piste.
The infrastructure is where the serious complaints begin. The cable links from the city have stopped: the Simeonovo gondola is out of service for good and the Dragalevtsi chairlift is not running either, so the only way up is by car or bus, which leaves the mountain road gridlocked at weekends. Several drag lifts and chairs were decommissioned and never replaced, few pistes remain in operation, and those run mostly at weekends. The slopes ice over often and a lot of the day goes on queueing.
