Breitenberg

An important note: alpine skiing at Breitenberg has stopped. Operations were discontinued in 2024 on safety grounds, as warming and erosion undermined the lift pylons, and the pistes are no longer served. The mountain now runs on a different winter model, and that is what gets praised: the four-seat Hochalpbahn still climbs to 1677 metres, and a six-kilometre natural toboggan run, the longest in the Allgaeu, drops from the top past prepared winter walking trails and sun terraces.

The loss of the ski area itself is the main criticism. Even before the shutdown, reviews pointed to the underlying weakness: no snowmaking had been built in twenty years, leaving the slopes critically dependent on natural cover. The lift fleet was rated only moderately: two chairlifts and four drag lifts, never modernised. The cable car's own site no longer mentions pistes or ski lifts in winter.
