Damüls in the Bregenzerwald is known above all for its precipitation: by average annual snowfall it is one of the snowiest inhabited places in the world, with some nine metres a winter. Since 2009 the Gipfelbahn has connected it to Mellau in the next valley, and together they form the largest area in Vorarlberg outside the Arlberg. There is hardly any black terrain - the slopes are wide and intermediate - and from the ridge below the Damülser Mittagsspitze you can see Lake Constance on a clear day. The lifts have been replaced steadily, and most of the chairs are six-seaters with bubbles.

What visitors say about the resort

The praise is for the snow: Damüls gets more than nine metres of fresh snow in an average winter and was named the snowiest village in the world in 2006. Yet there are no powder-day crowds, the equipment is modern with hooded chairs, and midweek there are no queues at all. The pistes are wide and excellently groomed, with plenty of freeride and tree skiing in between.

The link between Damüls and Mellau draws criticism - wind closes it and the area splits in two. Prices in the mountain restaurants are called outrageous for the quality. On busy holidays the piste condition by lunchtime is noticeably worse than the weather would suggest.
