Grimentz and Zinal lie at the head of the Val d'Anniviers, ringed by the "imperial crown" - a chain of four-thousanders from the Weisshorn and Zinalrothorn to the Dent Blanche. The two formerly separate areas were joined in the winter of 2013/14 by one of the longest cable cars in Switzerland. Most of the skiing here is off-piste: the slopes face north, snow settles from mid-November and holds into late April, and there are more high-mountain itineraries than marked runs. Grimentz itself is an old village of sixteenth-century timber houses blackened by the sun.

The praise is for the freeriding and the snow: even in lean winters this corner of the Valais holds cover, and the area is rated among the best in the canton for piste condition. Reviewers note the relaxed, unshowy atmosphere and the lack of people, and from Zinal five four-thousanders stand in view at once. Both villages have kept their old quarters of weathered timber. The new gondola has cut the morning queues noticeably.
The criticism is that the area is built for the capable: easy runs are few, and beginners are uncomfortable here. The return from Zinal to Grimentz is called tiring and is not recommended for small children.
